Adding Media to Layouts

Adding Media to Layouts

Once you’ve defined regions in the Layout Designer, the next step is to assign content to them. This article covers how to add media items to layout regions.

  1. Select a region on the canvas by clicking it.
  2. In the Properties panel, click Content Source and choose Media or Playlist.
  3. A media picker opens. Browse or search your library.
  4. Select one or more items and click Add.

When you assign a single image or video to a region, it fills the region for its configured duration. Videos play at their natural length; images use the default duration (10 seconds, configurable).

Assigning multiple items to a region creates an inline playlist. The items play in the order you added them, cycling through before the region’s parent playlist moves to the next item.

When an image or video is placed in a region, you can control how it fits:

Fit ModeDescription
FillScales to cover the entire region. May crop edges.
FitScales to fit within the region. May leave empty space.
StretchStretches to exactly match the region dimensions. May distort.
OriginalDisplays at the media’s native size. May overflow or leave gaps.

Set the fit mode in the region’s Properties panel under Media Fitting.

Instead of individual media items, you can assign an entire playlist to a region. This is useful when:

  • The same sequence of content plays across multiple layouts.
  • You want to manage the content sequence independently from the layout.
  • The playlist is dynamic and updates automatically.

When a playlist is assigned to a region, the region plays through the playlist’s items in order, then loops.

If a media item assigned to a layout expires or is retired, the region shows a placeholder with a warning icon. The layout still publishes, but the expired content is skipped during playback.
